Armadillo Willy’s BBQ restaurant is a great family-friendly restaurant for those looking for an allergy-friendly menu.
While they don’t yet have an allergy menu, they’re moving in the right direction. A list of their gluten-free options is available on request and it includes a large portion of their menu (although be sure to check when you go, as things do change). There is a legal statement about not being able to guarantee cross-contamination, so those very sensitive to gluten may want to avoid the restaurant.
Specific gluten-free items include many of their meats like the Lonestar BBQ Chicken and the Award-Winning Texas Ribs. Gluten-free sides include their Sweet Willy’s BBQ Beans and Texas Corn Salad. Burgers are gluten-free without the bun.
As for other allergies, whenever we’ve been there, the staff has been friendly and willing to do what they can to accommodate MT’s milk and egg allergies. We’ve been going to Willy’s since before MT turned one and we’ve never had a problem. She eats the kids’ Rib Plate, which comes with two Texas Ribs and apple slices, the Fresh-Cut Fries, and sometimes we mix it up with the 18-Hour Beef Brisket.
Most of the time when we eat out, MT ends up with food that is light on flavor (plain grilled chicken, steamed veggies, and rice or plain udon noodles), but at Willy’s she gets her big, bold flavors. And, she gets lots of meat – which is a nice break for someone who is not vegetarian but is often limited to vegan items at restaurants.
Armadillo Willy’s has eight restaurants in the San Francisco Bay Area – mostly on the peninsula and south bay, with one restaurant in Dublin.
As always, make sure you alert the staff to your food allergies or gluten intolerance and work with them to insure that your dish is safe for you.
